Note to Self

Note: My mom suggested that I write this letter to the past, and write about things that have happened during "Covid Break". I'm so glad she suggested it, because it made me think of all the good and bad times, the memories and experiences made, when confined to the house, or my bedroom, or during social distance learning, and wearing the dreaded masks. It was great to look back and remember.

Note to Self

       Dear Past Self,

This is your future self speaking. Or rather, writing. Listen carefully, for I bare important news about the upcoming future.

I’m sure you have heard about the virus spreading in China. You think it won’t reach Israel? Think again. Incautious people and tourists will bring the virus here, and incautious Israelis will catch it, and Corona will spread. And beware! The day after Purim vacation ends, there will be a quite frightening evening. Ferocious winds, an egg shortage, a toilet paper rush, and still debate over who will be the prime minister after a third election. Meanwhile, Bibi Netanyahu will give a speech, saying that because of covid-19, SCHOOL WILL CANCEL UNTIL AFTER PESACH! Sounds great, huh? NO! NOT GREAT! ABSOLUTELY NOT GREAT! Because while more vacation sounds
fun, it’ll quickly get boring. Plus, to go out of the house, you will have to wear one of man’s cruelest creations: Masks

I’m warning you now, masks are HORRIBLE. They’re horrific. They’re irritating. They’re unbearable. They’re itchy. They’re hot. They’re annoying…

I could go on for HOURS on how much I hate masks, but you know what’s worse than masks? Dying of a horrible disease. So, just get it over with, and be prepared for itchiness and heat.

So anyway, you’re probably wondering why extra vacation would be so bad. Well I’ll tell you why. Because things got so bad, we DIDN’T go back to school after Pesach.

Now, don’t think to yourself, “Well, at least we don’t have to learn.” Because that is very incorrect. Very, very, incorrect. The board of education decided that we still need to keep our education, and thus started… (drumroll please) the dreaded social distance learning. Learning through the school website and an app called Zoom, so we could learn through video call and still see each other’s faces. Zipadeedooda. But after a few months of learning on the computer, (I practically never wanted to see the school website again) the Board of Education decided that Covid-19 had cleared up just enough that we could go back to learning in a classroom. Don’t start complaining, this is a very good thing. One day, if I ever heard my kids give a PEEP about hating school, I will rant on for HOURS about how I longed to return to school during the 2020 corona pandemic.

There were some bright sides, and some down sides about returning to school.

Seeing friends in person.

Exams cancelled.

We have air conditioning.

Can’t hug or touch friends

We’re still learning.

We must wear masks.

So, finally, we’re back in school! And because of Covid-19, we missed a lot of school, so end of year exams canceled. But soon, school re-ended. School summer camp started. It was so much fun. And then…       camp was canceled. (Will the government just make up their mind?!) Now I am sitting at home, writing this letter to you, (or me, take your pick) hoping that maybe you (or me) can convince people to be more cautious so that lives can be saved, and suffering prevented.

Yours Truly, (Literally)

Sima Simpson
